Truth on Trial: Pontius Pilate

Pontius Pilate washes his hands over a green patina bronze bowl with an inscription as Roman soldiers stand in the background, representing the biblical scene of Pilate washing his hands.

failed a defining moment that he could never fix

and it was all downhill from his pinnacle ever since

asking a question with historical rue –

What is truth?

As if he didn’t’ have a clue?

What kind of question is that coming from the one sitting on the judgment seat?

Couldn’t he at least sort out a few deceit receipts?

Didn’t he say Jesus was faultless?

Didn’t he see the religious leaders were jealous?

How could he befriend his enemy Herod by betraying an innocent man?

Didn’t he know cleansing your conscience isn’t as easy as washing your hands?

How could he play games with someone’s life?

Just to impress a man who stole his own brother’s wife?

Didn’t he know Barabbas was the true criminal?

How could Pilate be so addicted to approval?

Did he really believe this would make him heroic in Caesar’s sight?

Hadn’t he been married long enough to know when his wife was right?

How could he inflict such violence after marveling at Jesus’ dignified silence?

Didn’t he know it’s a trap when people cling tightly to their convictions while demanding you compromise yours?

How could he sell his soul so low when a good name is worth more than gold?

Now what mother would announce “Pontius Pilate” to doom the fruit of her womb?

Was this simply the result of fate’s mess?

No, he was scammed by his own delusions of greatness!
