Besides our indigenous population, we are a nation of immigrants; some were forced others came voluntarily looking for better opportunities. When the pilgrims fled England due to religious persecution, they arrived in what is now known as the Americas. There was already a stable population in place with customs and cultures. You can’t discover something that was already occupied.
Amazing enough, or maybe it’s ignorance or a very short memory, we now have people of European descent screaming at the top of their lungs that there is a “Great Replacement” taking place, where Europeans are being replaced with people of color, including immigrants. The belief is that the Jewish population is behind the efforts to replace European Whites with immigrants of the color[1] With this antisemitic ideology, we see an increase in the white supremacist movement, which to me is an oxymoron as race is a social construct and people with little melanin are not superior to anyone else, although some may believe that to be the case.
The Great Replacement Theory could be associated with Roe vs. Wade recently being overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court. With respect to the various opinions about abortion, the reality is that abortion is healthcare. Many Americans believe it is a decision that should be made by the woman who is pregnant. We know there are situations when women are raped and children are molested and now we have states that have completely banned taking anything into account for why someone would opt to terminate a pregnancy.
The Great Replacement Theory shows up as it did in Charlottesville when we saw predominantly European American men chanting, “We will not be replaced,” while carrying tiki torches. The notion that this country someone how belongs to just European Americans is a hard concept for me to understand, considering we know historically they invaded/squatted on land that was not theirs. Our indigenous brothers and sisters experienced genocide at the hands of those who came to “America” looking to escape religious persecution. The 1830 Indian Removal Act, which resulted in the 1832 Trail of Tears, forced our indigenous brothers and sisters off their land, which the Europeans wanted to occupy, and displaced them as they travel hundreds of miles west of the Mississippi River.[2] The song “one little Indian, two little Indian was counting dead Indians (Indigenous) people on the Trail of tears.
The Great Replacement Theory is a joke, as European Americans are not the people indigenous to the land we all currently occupy. “When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression”[3], and that seems to be the feeling of those who believe they have a right to this land. Fear is what is driving the Great Replacement Theory, fear that people of color and immigrants will treat European Americans like they have been treated, with disdain and hate. Fear is what drives the racially motivated crimes we see European Americans impose onto those of us with beautiful melanin skin. It drives the hate we see projected upon our Jewish brothers and sisters. Hate doesn’t solve anything but it is deep in the hearts of those who think that when the demographics of our nation change, we will treat them as we have been treated.
