“Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.”
Philippians 4:8-9, The Message
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s last sermon was the timeless Mountaintop speech on April 3rd, one day before he was assassinated. The prophetic words proclaimed made it eternally clear that he saw something beyond. Scripture reminds us that we are not in a valley of despair but on the mountaintop, looking beyond the valleys, chasms, crevices, and low places of the present cultural/political moment.
Three-Fifths Magazine endeavors to think on these things, as suggested in scripture, as we celebrate our fourth anniversary. What do you see, and how can we make it happen? The end is yet to be determined.
“Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” James Baldwin
