I’m asking God for a big favor based on Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (ESV).
One of the desires of my heart is a Kevlar-coated Hummer EV. Why? Because the commercials make it look so fun! I can see myself driving one across dirt roads and through shallow rivers, mud splashing the windshield as I bounce over the rocks in the riverbed and dust trailing my truck as I speed and skid through tumbleweed-dotted plains. Of course, I’ll congratulate myself for being conscientious about carbon emissions as I join the quiet revolution.
Like the creatures riding on wheels within wheels in Ezekiel chapter 1, I’ll be able to elevate up and down in “Extract Mode” and drive diagonally in “Crab Mode.” Then I’ll experience the g-forces making me one with the driver’s seat as I switch to “WTF Mode” (which means Watts To Freedom, of course). There’s no neck-jerking from grinding gears, just effortless acceleration causing that rollercoaster feeling in my belly.
Old spirituals, like “Ezekiel Saw De Wheel” and “Swing Low,” will take on new meaning as I ride “way up in the middle of the air.” Atop the Hummer’s 37” tires, I’ll sing about “the little wheel run by faith” and “the big wheel run by the grace of God.” No matter how carried away I get in this 9,000-pound, high-tech, heavy-duty marvel, I have to remember that the biggest and best of wheels have cargo limits.
The heavenly wheels Ezekiel saw inspired the poet’s warning against the wrong baggage: “Don’t pray for things that you don’t need,” because “the Lord don’t like no sin and greed.”
On the other hand, another verse says we should pack plenty of concrete compassion and camaraderie: “You say the Lord has set you free. . . Why don’t you let your neighbor be?”
Although sitting high, I’ll still need to “swing low” with my “sweet chariot.” If I get the desires of my heart before my family and friends do, then I’m going to drive on through and insist that they come along, too.
Sometimes I might be up while others are down, but we can all get on board and be heavenly bound. That “band of angels” ain’t just “coming after me,” they coming after we.
Buckle up, it’s going to be an electriflying ride!
