A Tweetology of christian Nationalism

One of these days and it won’t be long; You’re gonna look for me and I’ll be gone. I’ll be one of X’s exes, but I’ll leave the platform with a consolation prize of cut and paste posts related to WcN (White christian Nationalism).

christian Nationalism has no moral ground to stand on. It wasn’t built on the solid rock teachings of the biblical, brown-skinned Jesus, but upon the sinking sand of socially constructed whiteness.

Jesus denied the offer of empire (Matt. 4:8-10); preached the Gospel isn’t nationalistic (Luke 4:16-27); rebuked strife for worldly power (Luke 22:24-27); said his kingdom’s not of this world (John 18:36); and refused temporal throne after resurrection (Acts 1:6).

God allegedly gave Constantine a vision in 312, telling him to conquer by the sign of the cross and christian Imperialism was born. Church leaders embraced what Jesus rejected. Claiming to be Peter’s successors, they took up Caesar’s sword after Jesus told Peter to put his down.

Christian Imperialism birthed Christian Nationalism through the Doctrine of Discovery.

Pope Nicholas V issued papal bull, Dum Diversas in 1452, to bless the plunder of Africans. Excerpt: “We grant you [Kings of Spain & Portugal] with our Apostolic Authority, full and free permission to invade… and subjugate… enemies of Christ … and to reduce their persons into perpetual slavery.”

Pope Alexander VI issued papal bull Inter Caetera in 1493, granting ‘discovered’ lands to Ferdinand, Isabella, and Columbus. Excerpt: “that in our times especially the Catholic faith and the Christian religion be exalted and be everywhere increased and spread. . . and that barbarous nations be overthrown and brought to the faith itself.”

King Henry VII of England in 1496: Be it known and made manifest that we have given and granted…to our well beloved John Cabot… to find, discover and investigate whatsoever islands… or provinces of heathens and infidels… which before this time were unknown to all Christians. John and his sons… may conquer, occupy and possess whatsoever such towns, castles, cities and islands.

El Requerimiento excerpt from 1513: “Acknowledge the Church as the Ruler and Superior of the whole world…and the high priest called Pope…But if you do not do this… I certify to you that, with the help of God, we shall… make war against you… we shall take you and your wives and children, and shall make slaves of them.”

In 1682, Puritan Cotton Mather sought the capture of William Penn and “a hundred or more of the heretics and malignants called Quakers.” He recommended “selling the whole lot to Barbados, where slaves fetch good prices in rum and sugar,” in order to prevent the Lord from being “mocked on the soil of this new country”

The devil went down to Georgia in 1748 disguised as a preacher when George Whitefield persuaded the colony’s leadership they couldn’t prosper unless they overturned their ban on slavery.

US Supreme Court ruling on Johnson v. McIntosh in 1823 codified the Doctrine of Discovery: On the discovery of this immense continent, the great nations of Europe were eager to appropriate to themselves… The potentates of the old world found no difficulty in convincing themselves that they made ample compensation to the inhabitants of the new, by bestowing on them civilization and Christianity.

christian Nationalism doesn’t value non-white families, lives, voices, or votes, whether we’re straight or not; pro-life or not; Christian or not. They only value control over others and when they run out of traditional others they’ll otherize each other.

Coercive Christianity converts almost nobody but corrupts almost everybody.

Part of the reason this christian Nationalism crisis has blind-sided so many Americans is that so-called experts have scotomas from not paying enough attention to what people of color have been saying for ages.

“The whole church structure in this country is white nationalism – that’s what they preaching. They got Jesus white, Mary white, God white, everybody white – that’s white nationalism.” #MalcolmX

“We all know that a racist structure will reject and threaten a black man in white skin as quickly as a black man in black skin. It accepts and rewards whites in black skins nearly as well as whites in white skins.” – James H. Cone.

“Our nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American was an inferior race. From the sixteenth century forward, blood flowed in battles over racial supremacy.” #MLK

About 150 of the 350 languages currently spoken in the U.S. are Native American. After so many centuries of war, disease, and forced assimilation, this diversity of tongues speaks volumes about the multitudes living here before their land was “discovered.”

Why do we still need the Black Church? It’s impossible to conceive of a colorblind Christianity when the default setting for biblical art is de-melanated people.

christian Nationalists only want democracy until they can establish theocracy (that’s hierarchical according to race, sex, and class). Voting for them is voting against yourself.

Theocracy is bad for theology and democracy.

There can be religious or irreligious nationalism. Christianity is an ingredient in cN (along with racism, xenophobia, sexism, militarism, etc). When you sync all these ideologies, you have antichrist, not Christ; not because it’s atheistic but because it’s demonic.

christian Nationalism masquerades as the Lamb but has the dragon’s heart (Revelation 13:11).

White christian Nationalism (WcN) – not white Christian nationalism (wCn). Their main goal isn’t following Jesus, but using him as their mascot in their White Nationalism crusade.

The decolonizing of Christianity is resetting the default missionary setting of the last 500 years and is triggering the evangelical anti-wokenness we’re seeing. But 3/5 magazine gonna stay woke: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” (Eph. 5:14)

christian Nationalism is trying to recreate Dan. 3:1-7. The idol they want everyone to bow down to is an image of mythological American exceptionalism made of imaginary white supremacy.

What if our treatment of migrants is a more accurate ECG of our spiritual health than church attendance, tithing, or political affiliation? What if these new neighbors are God’s instruments for bringing the revival we say we need?

Some have made a vocation of looting Black folks’ vocabulary. Despite the linguistic larceny, we’re still gonna stay wokety, woke, woke, woke! “Awake, my God; decree justice.” – Psalm 7:6

Pro-life was never the driving value. It was propaganda to get pulpits (even of BIPOC preachers) involved in the White christian Nationalist power grab.

Professed creationists who cut holes in safety nets are practicing evolutionists, sacralizing the survival of the slickest.

Some people are censoring books that the libraries don’t even have. It seems those who were most outraged about cancel culture are doing most of the canceling.

Leadbelly wasn’t indebted to Karl, Groucho, Harpo, Chico, nor any other Marx for being woke (and if you don’t know who he was, you should stop using “woke”).
