
The Autumn season brings the year to a glorious crescendo of color, “True Colors.” Cooler temperatures withdraw the masking of the greening chlorophyll to reveal each leaf’s true colors. We commonly call it fall foliage. In the same way, America’s Demographic Change reveals an America looking much closer to the ethnically colorful land that existed before European footsteps graced its shores.
However, change is never easy and not always peaceful, as American history taught correctly demonstrates. Demographic change is becoming more prevalent every day. For example, “Whites are no longer the majority population in Texas.” As the social construct of whiteness withdraws like chlorophyll, sadly, with rollbacks of affirmative action and voting rights, to name a few, we again see the ugly side of America’s True Colors. Three-Fifths Magazine challenges us all with the question. How can we make repeating cycles of advance and fallback cease and allow for a genuine and enduring celebration of the collage of ethnic true colors?
